A heartbreaking story of how a 2-year old girl who died untimely was embalmed by her father for a century due to his undying love and passion for her.
Nearly 100 years ago, a 2-year-old Italian girl named Rosalia Lombardo died of pneumonia. Her body was embalmed, placed into a glass coffin and kept inside the Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo, Italy.
Because of the way her body was embalmed, one glance and it looks as though she’s still alive hence the nickname, “Sleeping Beauty”
According to the video’s YouTube description, Rosalia’s father was so devastated upon her death that he approached Alfredo Salafia, a noted embalmer, to preserve her.
Her body was one of the last corpses to be admitted to the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo in Sicily and it’s one of the best preserved bodies in the catacombs.
But that’s only part of what makes Rosalia’s story so bizarre. Visitors of the catacombs have reported that her eyes appear to open and close, and in the video below you’ll see a timelapse of what’s either an anomaly, or an optical illusion.
People are divided as to the explanation, and I myself don’t know what to think. It definitely looks like her eyes are closed in one picture and open in the next.
