A woman who went to hospital to check her eyes, was horrified when doctors revealed the reason why her eyes were irritated.

According to Daily Star UK, the woman, who has been named only as Xu, went for a check-up after noticing a persistent itch across her lash-line.

Horrifyingly, parasites were found living on her skin as a result of her not changing her pillow case for five years.

Initially, a pharmacist had recommended that Xu takes eyedrops to cure the illness.

But weeks later, her condition worsened to the point that her lids began sticking together.

The patient was eventually persuaded to visit her local hospital in the central Chinese province of Hubei.

The doctors carrying out the examination found 100 eyelash mites living in her lashes.

They informed her that a colony 10 eyelash mites could live in one single follicle. She was then diagnosed with blepharitis and conjunctivitis.

Xu’s symptoms reportedly cleared up after she received treatment.

Sleeping with dirty pillow cases can have other negative impacts on your health.

Some of the most common ailments are allergic reactions or skin irritation.

Those who experience acne or blackheads on a regular basis are advised to be extra vigilant with washing their bedding.

Many of us put our pillow cases in the laundry ever week, but one cleaning guru recommends that you do this chore even more regularly.

Expert Shannon Lush recently told news.com.au: “Human skin is protein, and lots of nasties live in protein.

“If you’re showering once a day, you can wash your sheets weekly.

“However, pillowcases should be changed every second day without fail.

“It’s against your face, and your hair holds more dirt than anywhere else on the body. It’s like a mop.”
