A man has ended up dying a tragic death after he fell into a wood chipper in front of his bewildered friends while clearing out trees.

The scene of the tragic incident

A 54-year-old man has died after tragically falling into a wood chipper on a rural property in Australia.

According to The Sun UK, the man was clearing a driveway at Goomborian, Gympie in Queensland with two friends yesterday when the horrific accident happened.

In a press conference, Acting Inspector Paul Algie said the way the man died was “absolutely shocking”.

He told ABC: "It’s a horrendous thing to have to attend as a police officer — any sudden death — but these circumstances were absolutely shocking.

“Everyone’s obviously very distressed and we’re still trying to work out the circumstances as to who has seen what.”

None of the men were contractors and were there to help the person who owns the property.

“They are all friends and they were doing a favour for the lady that owns the property sadly,” Maryborough Forensics Inspector Steve Webb told Channel Nine.

Inspector Algie said the two men who were with the man when the fatal incident occurred were “extremely distressed”.

“They’re understandably extremely distressed over what’s occurred,” he said. “They’re very traumatised as a result of what’s happened and police are assisting them obviously in any way we can in terms of ongoing welfare needs.”

Paramedics confirmed they attended the scene at about 8pm on Sunday night but were unable to revive the victim.

The man died instantly and his death is currently being treated as an accident.

Police could not confirm if the man had been using the wood chipper unsafely or incorrectly.

Officers from the Sunshine Coast’s Workplace Health and Safety team are currently investigating and police are preparing a report for the coroner.

Forensic crash officers and the victim identification unit from Brisbane are also “still trying to ascertain” how it happened.

The identification of the victim has not been released.
